Tips on Practicing the Techniques

The left hook has remarkable power and often catches the opponent unawares because it comes from a blind spot. When practicing the hook punch, the practitioner must learn to use footwork and the jab to set it up. To throw an effective jab, one must be quick and explosive. Do not telegraph the movement. Immediately after the jab, slide to the side and throw the hook with a quick yet relaxed circular action. When delivering the left hook, it is greatly enhanced by leading with a jab and then hooking off the jab. The power in the hook punch comes from the whipping action and snap, not from throwing it with force. In fact, oftentimes, the harder a person throws the hook, the wider and wilder the punch becomes, making it telegraphic and ineffective. Conversely, the hook can be thrown with an open hand, like a slap, and this can be very effective in street fighting situations, providing a tremendous amount of force but not damaging the hand.
